We obtained planning permission late last summer to build a new climbing centre and skate park on our land at Westmead Recreation ground.
Plans for our new climbing centre include interior & exterior climbing walls, bouldering, changing areas and a café. We were also granted permission to build a long awaited skatepark for Chippenham together with landscaping and picnic benches. Construction was expected to commence this summer (2020).
Following detailed plans, designs and cost estimates, the project was put out to tender earlier this year. Unfortunately, the initial responses came in substantially over budget.
Work to refine the programme and to reduce prices to a level more in line with expectations is still ongoing, taking longer than anticipated due to the current COVID-19 situation. We hope to finalise the process ready to commence building work by early 2021.
The Westmead Activity Centre (climbing centre and skate park project) will continue our long history of the provision of recreation and leisure facilities for the people of Chippenham.
